Chapter Five

Tientu, December 2005

Thrift was trying very hard not to scowl as she stepped from the hotel door. Fate seemed to be conspiring against her and with Mrs Bode. The hotel was not only crowded, but contained what seemed an unreasonable number of Europeans, all of whom had been given ample opportunity to inspect her both at dinner, breakfast and as they waited in the reception lounge for the car to be brought round. Every minute had been hideously embarrassing.

As she had known it would, the outline of her containment pants showed clearly beneath her beautiful Chinese dress, not only making it obvious she was in them and spoiling the contours of her figure, but drawing attention to her in a most unwelcome way. To the Chinese, even Empire Yuen and Zhang Qin, her being naked beneath her dress had been unusual only in that they were curious about her fuller, European figure. It had been embarrassing in front of other European men, but not intolerably so, while not being constantly hot had more than compensated for the drawbacks. Now, she had the worst of all worlds. The Chinese stared, no doubt wondering what bizarre garment she had on beneath her dress. The European men pretended not to stare, but took every opportunity to do so, either because they knew exactly what she was in, and therefore why, or simply because the pants drew attention to her bottom and hips. As a final annoyance, they made her middle section uncomfortably hot and kept her constantly aware of her body. Her nipples had been hard all morning, sticking up through her dress so prominently that nobody who saw her could fail to notice.

She also had decisions to make, which was extremely difficult when she was the constant focus of every man they met and also of Mrs Bode’s cruelty. In one way or another, they needed to act, and her first thought, to return to Tungshek on some pretext and await the Brigadier, was plainly impractical. Once he was there, it would be impossible to prevent him passing on whatever information he might wish to Liu Chiao.

They had at least ascertained his whereabouts, a discreet call to Decency at the Residence revealing that he was still there. Yet to return early from their tour would be likely to excite his suspicion. Sally had suggested a third option, to station themselves at some point between the Residence and Tungshek and thus seem to meet the Brigadier by chance as he passed. There were drawbacks, but it increasingly seemed the best option.

The initial drawback was that there were two possible roads between Hoihow and Tungshek. One followed the coast most of the way and was better made, but also longer, while it ran through a considerable number of villages. The other came up the Nantu Valley and through the mountains, and while it was slow and winding, it was shorter and had very few villages on the way. It was also
